We have had a busy and fun first term in Year 5. For our first week and a bit back, we started to look at some poetry and our new book. The poem we looked at was called, "Hope is the thing with feathers." We talked about hope and what the key messages of the poem are. We then wrote our own poems inspired by this but representing it as something different like a waterfall. We then decorated our poems. During this unit, we also created a piece of art using pastels. We drew a picture of an owl and then used different techniques to bring it to life with the colours!
In our second week, we started talking about our history topic for the term, World War One. We talked about the Western Front and trenches. We began by drawing pictures of trenches and then we wrote a diary entry as if we were a soldier in the trenches. We used coffee-stained paper, and it created a lovely effect, ready to be put up on display!
In week three, we had European language's day! Our class learnt all about Greece. We quizzed ourselves on some facts, we learnt about the mythical creatures from ancient Greek mythology and we decorated some flags!
In week four, we started our new topic in English. We started to look at a book called 'Last' about the last white Rhino. We learnt about the character Sudan, and we wrote a diary entry from his POV in the Safari.
During week five, in PE, we designed some obstacle courses using lots of different resources. After they were complete, we challenged each other to complete them with their eyes closed, only listening to instructions from a teammate! The children worked in teams beautifully!
In our final full week, we finished off our science projects. During the term, we learnt about the life cycles of different types of animals. For our project, we picked two different types of animals, researched them, made posters, and then presented our research to the class, describing the differences between the animals and their life cycles. The children did a brilliant job!
