We started the term off by sharing what we did during the Easter holidays.
The majority of the children spoke confidently and clearly and lots of children were able to use time adverbials to organise their oral recount. During their child initiated learning, the children have been drawing pictures of what they did during the Easter break.
In Literacy, we have started reading the story 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. The children have been learning to describe a character and have written phrases/sentences describing the bear. The role play area in our classroom has been transformed into a space station! The children have enjoyed acting out being astronauts and weighing moon rock. In their child initiated learning, the children have been using blocks and wooden planks to build their own rockets.
In Maths this week, the children have been learning to recognise coins and make amounts.
We started off the week by going on a welly walk on Monday looking for signs of spring and how our environment has changed. The children enjoyed exploring the field and identified Daisies, Dandelions and buds growing on the trees and bushes. We were lucky to see a few butterflies on the Buddleia growing outside KS1 and Reception.
In Literacy this week, the children have been drawing story maps of 'Whatever Next'. We plan to use our story maps when we retell the story next week. The children have learnt the story off by heart using talk for write actions and are then using this in their child initiated play.
In Maths this week, the children have been learning to group objects in 2s, 5s and 10s and count how many objects they have. Some children were able to record number sequences!
In their child initiated learning, the children have been painting space pictures. Some children chose to paint rockets and some children chose to paint the moon and planets. Lots of detail was added, including craters for the moon!
This week the children have been retelling the beginning of the story 'Whatever Next' using their story maps.
The children have been trying so hard to sound out their words independently and include adverbials such as 'next' or 'then'. In their own child initiated learning, the children have been acting out the story 'Whatever Next' and they have been pretending to be astronauts going to the moon!
In Maths this week the children have been learning to estimate and we have discussed what an accurate estimate is.
The children have been exploring the concept of floating and sinking in the water trays outside. They are able to identify what objects float and sink. The children have been exploring the question - do large objects sink and small objects float.
This week we have been learning to write a retelling of the story 'Whatever Next'. The children have worked extremely hard and are becoming so much more independent in their writing. In their child initiated learning, the children have been using grapheme tiles to spell out words and phrases phonetically.
In Maths this week we have been learning to 'talk about the Maths' and use Mathematical language. The children have been using sentence stems to say what they can see eg, "I can see more _____ than ____. I can see fewer ____ than _____."
This term both Reception classes have been taking part in yoga sessions with a qualified yoga teacher. The children have really enjoyed their sessions! Next term the Reception children will be going swimming.
During our creative sessions this week the children have been making junk models of rockets. The children were very particular with what they wanted to include on their rockets such as rocket boosters and windows.
